What is the Stay Afloat Grant program?

 The Stay Afloat Grant Program provides financial assistance of up to $500 to support families of children with conditions of medical complexity facing unexpected expenses related to caring for their child.

Who is eligible to apply for the Stay Afloat Grant?

 Families of children with complex medical conditions are eligible to apply if they meet specific criteria related to medical complexity. These include chronic health conditions with high morbidity, impact to daily living,  high healthcare utilization, and/or technology dependence.

Can a family receive the Stay Afloat Grant more than once?

 No, each family can only receive the Stay Afloat Grant once per calendar year.

Who reviews the applications for the Stay Afloat Grant?

 All applications are carefully reviewed by pediatric medical specialists to ensure that assistance is provided to families with the most pressing needs.

What expenses can the Stay Afloat Grant cover?

The grant is intended to cover unexpected or unanticipated short-term expenses resulting from the care of a child with conditions of medical complexity.

Can the grant be combined with other grants to pay for expenses?

 Yes, there is no limitation to combining funds from the Stay Afloat grant with other assistance received from other organizations.

Is my personal information kept confidential?

 Yes, we prioritize the privacy and confidentiality of every family’s personal information and only collect what is necessary to process the application.

What is the "healthcare sponsor" required for the application?

 The healthcare sponsor is a health care professional (physician, nurse practitioner, nurse, social worker, etc.) that provides care to your child and will sign the application to verify the information provided. A healthcare sponsor is required for submission.

How often are applications reviewed?

Applications are reviewed on a monthly basis. If an application is not approved, it will be rolled over for an additional two months. If after three months, the application is not approved for funding, the application will be rejected. At that point, the family may submit a new application with additional information to supplement the new application.

How soon after an application is selected will grants be disbursed?

Applications selected for funding are verified with the healthcare sponsor and checks are then disbursed to the family, usually in the first two weeks of the following month.

How are applications selected for funding?

Applications are scored based on information provided by the family. Scoring is based on: 

  • demonstration of financial need 
  • justification of the amount requested with receipts or invoices
  • description of how funds will be used
  • criteria for conditions of medical complexity
  • supportive letter from healthcare sponsor
